Antique BUDGEN CROYDON 8 Day Oak Longcase Grandfather Clock with STRIKE / SILENT

DESCRIPTION: This is fabulous oak longcase clock which is of lovely proportions. It has an eight-day movement on a brass square dial which is signed'Budgen Croydon' and has a rare feature of a STRIKE / SILENT facility to the arch which allow the striking to be switch off if required. If we start with the hood, this has a lovely arched top finished shaped moulding. Lovely full turned columns flank the hood door which terminate in gilt capitals. There are nice quarter turned columns to the rear. We then move down to the trunk this has beautifully shaped full-length door, which is flanked by reeded canted corners. The door also has a wonderful brass escutcheon and is complete with it's lock and key.
The base has a lovely shaped applied panel and is raised on a shaped plinth. The eight-day movement striking the hour has an arched brass face with makers name of. It also has a subsidiary second dial and date aperture. The four corners are adorned with beautiful spandrels whilst the arch incorporates the'STRIKE / SILENT' facility which allows the striking of the hours to be switched off if required. There are two'Budgen Croydon' listed in Brain Loomes Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World Volume 2' :'BUDGEN.
As this clock dates to circa 1760 this would indicate the maker to be Thomas Budgen Croydon. DIMENSIONS: The approximate dimensions are: - 83 3/4 inches / 213 cm high to top of clock.
20 1/2 inches / 52 cm across the widest part of the hood - 13 3/4 inches / 35 cm across the trunk - 18 3/4 inches / 47.5 cm across the widest part of the base. As can be seen from these dimension this is a clock of lovely slim proportions.
The clock is in wonderful condition, there is a chip to the capital on the bottom right hood column. The movement is lovely and clean and is.
