Fine Early 18th C 12in Brass 8 Day Longcase Clock Dial William Stepto St Giles

A good heavy quality 12 inch brass longcase clock dial dating from around 1705. Good boys and crown spandrels. Good quality engraving throughout the dial.

Beautiful engraving around the date aperture centre hole and the edges of the dial between the spandrels. Ringed winding holes and seconds hole.

The bottom edge of the dial is signed William Stepto St Giles (London). Loomes lists Stepto as being apprenticed 1695 and free of the clockmakers Company in 1703.

Still a member in 1710. Condition ; Dial surfaces have their old un-cleaned patina. The dial is not buckled or dented. Sadly the Chapter ring is missing as is the date ring.

Dial plate 30.3 cm (11 15/16) square. Thickness dial plate between 1.5 mm up to 2.2 mm at centre. Outside diameter of chapter ring 28.9 cm (from marking on dial plate). Inside diameter of chapter ring 16.4 cm (approx from marking out on dial plate). Outside diameter seconds dial 6.25 cm.
