A Rare and stunning musical Longcase Clock by John Agar of Malton playing 4 tunes on 8 Bells in a full Mahogany case. The painted arched dial, with Arabic and Roman numerals, has painted corner spandrels representing the Four Seasons, brass hands, and a rotating moon dial in the arch. The movement has completely been stripped down and serviced.The subsidiary dial gives a choice of four tunes. The 14 inch painted dial fronts a massive eight day, a three train weight driven movement playing four tunes on a nest of eight bells, striking the hour on a larger. The movement is housed in a beautiful flame mahogany case, with inlays, cluster columns to the hood and trunk, and gothic arches to the trunk door. There was three John Agar's.
A John II moved from York to Malton by 1784 (d1814) and his son John III born in New Malton in 1782. The clock was a featured exhibit at The Vales and Dales Yorkshire Clocks Exhibition at The Garden Rooms in Leyburn, North Yorkshire 2017.
