Scottish Grandfather/Longcase Clock By'Alex Breckenridge Of Kilmarnock.' 8-Day

Lofthouse Antiques, Abbots Bromley, Staffs. This is an arched-top 8-day painted face Scottish clock in a magnificent rose mahogany case. The face has brass hands and working seconds and date dials. Numerals are in Roman and Arabic.

The spandrels depict the four continents and to the arch is a painting of "Old Mortality". The movement is clean and keeps good time.

It rings to the hour on a bell. The hood has a flat top and apertures to the sides. The hood door has a brass knob. The trunk is in flame mahogany, the door having a working lock and key. Please note: There is some historical loss to the spandrels, and minor loss to beading on the trunk.

None of this detracts from what is a very attractive clock. The firm of Alex Breckenridge & Sons was established in Market Lane in 1799 and was in the in the same family for 99 years before passing to a Mr Hall. The firm made clocks for churches in Riccarton, Mauchline (1859), Dundonald as well as Kilmarnock. Alex Breckenridge was the driving force behind the renowned clockmaking business.

His craftsmanship flourished during the 19th century. Notably, he worked from 1799 to 1848. One of their remarkable creations was a Scottish West-Coast longcase clock. This exquisite timepiece featured a white enamel dial. Another splendid example was an early Victorian mahogany longcase clock.

This masterpiece, crafted by A. Breckenridge, boasted a 13-inch arched and painted dial. Complemented by painted floral spandrels and a scenic river landscape in the arch. H = 83.5" W = 18" D = 9.25.
